The Perfect Blend of Residential & Bustling

Also known as the Atlas Center after the Atlas Center for the Performing Arts, H Street is one of DC’s most vibrant and unique communities, and one of its original commercial districts. Its rich history can still be seen in the charming downtown shopfronts that set the scene for a thriving commercial and entertainment center pulsing with exciting live music and theatre venues, delicious restaurants, and plenty of ways to enjoy the nightlife. Yet despite all the excitement and bustle of H Street, its surrounding area of tree-lined streets and quiet neighborhoods is a close and connected community residents truly love to call home.

What You'll Love in H Street

With so many great DC neighborhoods from which to choose, it's hard to know which one will be best for you! So here's what local residents (and visitors) truly love about H Street.

drinks and dining

There's Never a Dull Moment

There’s never a dull moment in the H Street Corridor! Find a wealth of shopping and dining along H Street NE, or take a stroll to the nearby Union Market or Hechinger Mall. Restaurants not to miss—Toki Underground, Le Grenier, Ben’s Chili Bowl, Bullfrog Bagels, Copycat Co, Maketto, Ethiopic, Fare Well, and the H Street Farmers Market is a great way to find only the freshest local produce and goods.

As one of DC’s unique nightlife and entertainment centers, H Street has a wealth of clubs, bars, music venues, and late-night restaurants to explore, as well as numerous art galleries and live performance venues. You can also enjoy some casual drinks any time of day at places like Sova (coffee and wine) or the Biergarten Haus. There’s rooftop beer and dining at Ben’s Upstairs, and you definitely don’t want to miss the H Street Country Club, which is the best mix of mini golf, skeeball, Mexican food, and margaritas.

public transportation

It's Really Walkable & Accessible

Besides being able to find all the dining and entertainment you need right on H Street, the area is also great for getting around. You can walk to Lincoln Park for a scenic run, walk, or picnic. You can walk to RFK Stadium where the DC United of MLS play. You can even walk to Eastern Market, Barracks Row, and the Mall. And while there’s no Metro stop on H Street, it’s only a few blocks to Union Station (on the Red Line)—or you can take a bus or hop on the H Street Streetcar!

friendly neighbors

The Neighborhood is Charming

H Street might be the thriving commercial district of the community, but the neighborhoods that surround it are surprisingly quiet, connected, and scenic. Green lawns, tree-lined streets, and plenty of sidewalks set the scene for charming historic homes dating back from the early 1900s. Two and three-story homes and rowhouses populate the neighborhood, offering a variety of options from which to choose. But the real beauty of the neighborhood is in its people and strong sense of community. Here, neighbors greet each other on the way to work or the store, and an overall sense of friendliness reigns over the community.
